Shinji SOMAI was arguably Japan’s most important director from the 1980s into the 1990s (see NIPPON RETRO), known in particular for his powerful long take camera style. What defined that style and why was it so important for a generation of filmmakers? Aaron Gerow is Professor of Film Studies and East Asian Languages & Literatures at Yale University.
