Orphaned Iori works as a housemaid for a wealthy family, but runs off when she is accused of stealing. Yuichi, a young man, picks her up and decides to adopt her. He and his best friend become Iori’s substitute family. But the circumstances of her adolescence are not easy, especially when a mysterious murder occurs. In what seems to be one of the longest takes in the history of film, SOMAI’s prologue introduces Iori’s childhood story before switching to her coming of age. Iori faces various problems of young women, while also being confronted with prejudice as an orphan. In stunning pictures, time and space melt into one entity and the jigsaw pieces fall into place.
