  • A presentation by Christian Chappelow, M.A. in deutscher Sprache

The notion of “genbaku bungaku” comprises a special case in modern Japanese literature: texts that are dealing with the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Authors like Tamiki HARA or Masuji IBUSE tried to give voice to these great seminal catastrophes of the post war era. As a consequence, they often had to face harsh criticism on the part of Japan’s literary elite. But at least since “Fukushima”, it has become clear that this theme is not historical. It rather belongs to the basics of modern literature. The lecture aims to reread and appreciate some of the most central texts of “genbaku bungaku” and to keep the memory of this important genre of postwar literature alive.
